JAMES R. NOLAN


James R. Nolan, Associate of HEA, is a broadly experienced general manager/strategic planner with significant credentials in petroleum refining, marine transport, retail and wholesale marketing, distribution and product trading. He has expertise with turnaround and crisis management, business process and operations performance improvement, organizing and leading cross-functional special projects, introduction of new technology and acquisitions and divestments.

Selected recent projects:

  • Financial Analysis Planning.  Provided interim management expertise during the sale of a major lubricants business. Managed equipment loan and buyback functions involving 14,000 retail locations nationwide and $45 million of equipment as part of sale of brand. Key member of project team that achieved highly successful sale of a lubes manufacturing refinery.
  • Strategic Planning.
    • Overhauled strategic direction of the fuels business of a major east coast refiner, improving retail marketing earnings from $20 million loss to more than $40 million profit and fuels division ROCE from 2% to 15% over three years.
    • Led strategic analysis of Northeast Refining process reconfiguration improving performance from $60 million loss in 1996 to $70 million profit.

  • Management.
    • As General Manager Manufacturing for Lubricants, achieved swift turnaround of extremely unstable situation at one refinery and improved performance at a second refinery.
    • CEO of marine operation including 10 ocean going tankers and barge fleets in Northeast and Puerto Rico. 550 employees, $100 million revenue, $10 million net income.

Mr. Nolan holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Grove City College, Pennsylvania, an MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware, and, as an MIT Sloan Fellow, received his MS in Management from MIT. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and of the National Petroleum Refiners Association.
